Controlling your or your loved one’s asthma isn’t as difficult as it sounds. The basics of asthma treatment is actually pretty simple.
Let me tell you about my own asthma management story. For many years, I tried to treat my asthma with just rescue inhalers. Rescue inhalers would take care of the problem in the short term. It made the wheezing the difficulty breathing go away, but they didn’t treat the actual cause of my breathing problems.
When I went to a new doctor, he prescribed a corticosteroid medicine, what they call a prevention inhaler to treat my asthma. It didn’t just treat the symptoms, it also worked to prevent my airway from becoming inflamed, therefore preventing future asthma attacks.
When you or your loved one have an asthma attack, you should use your rescue medicines as early as possible before they become worse. There’s four main symptoms of asthma attacks that almost all asthmatics show. The most obvious is the difficulty of breathing, where you feel like you’re trying to breath through a straw. There’s the sound and feeling of wheezing that you just can’t miss. There’s also chronic coughing, especially at night. There’s also a feeling of tightness or pressure in the chest area.
More Than Medicine To Mange Asthma
Something that I’ve found really helpful is an asthma action plan. The same doctor that prescribed me a prevention inhaler also helped me create a step by step action plan to treat my asthma attacks and to prevent future flare ups. It involves using the results from a Peak Flow Meter to determine the level of the attack and to determine the treatment. It brings asthma management to a higher level.
You should also get regular checkups so you can work with your doctor to mange your asthma. You should let your doctor know about any improvements or setbacks with your breathing. You should also talk about any side effects from the medicines. Talking with your doctor can go a long way to getting you the right medicines.
Another way to manage your asthma is to stay away from the triggers of your attacks. Sometimes, it’s easier said than done, but there are many things that you can do to reduce your asthma problems.
Dust is a common trigger of asthma attacks. I notice that when I go into a house that’s dusty, I’ll often have problems breathing right away. At my own house, I make sure that I clean and wash on a regular basis. Both vacuuming my carpet and washing my sheets weekly have made a huge difference.
Mold is another common problem in many households. When I was younger, I lived in a house with a basement that would get very damp every spring. We bought a dehumidifier and it made an almost immediate improvement on my asthma problems, even when I was upstairs.
Following these basic ideas and you’ll be taking a huge step in managing your asthma.
