Is it asthma or COPD?

Last year, out of the blue, my husbands grandma had to be admitted to the ER because she couldn’t breathe. At her discharge they said it was caused by COPD, however when she did her follow up with a pulmonary(sp?) specialist she said she was diagnosed with Asthma. They gave her breathing treatments and she coughs up a ton of brown mucus. They have put her on several different inhalers, which aren’t working at all. They have given her steroids, which only work a little. Now she is on oxygen almost constantly, cuz she has problems breathing MOST of the time, even when she is just sitting. I personally don’t think its asthma since i had it as a teenager, and im worried that we are wasting precious time treating her for the wrong thing.

Actually, the two can coexist. It sounds like she has been diagnosed with both, and each of course, needs to be treated appropriately. If this is the case, effective treatments can be a bit of a challenge especially if she is elderly.
