Since asthma is a genetic disease, our forefathers could have developed it. But they didn’t, not at the rate it is developing in our day. The media is subject to fashions and phases and the much talked about ozone layer of a few years ago barely gets a mention now. The ozone layer continues to be a problem as it is connected to pollution levels. The thinner it gets the more heat gets through to us and pollution levels are higher when it is hotter.

Alarmingly, children are starting smoking at a younger and younger age. Much has been done to reduce smoking among the population but it still has the draw card for children who are targeted by the tobacco barons. Schools have boys and girls standing outside with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths. This is a combination of poor guidance with lack of good role models and money in their pockets.

Children from good homes may smoke when peer pressure is stronger than their own resolve. A pregnant mother will increase the likelihood of her unborn child developing asthma if she smokes. She will also be compromising the baby’s health in other ways as well.

Surprisingly, being overly zealous with hygiene is another factor in the increase of asthma. In underdeveloped countries where children play with chickens and animals in the dirt, asthma is not an issue. They do of course have other health issues associated with bacteria, but as far as asthma is concerned their immune systems are strong.

Compare that with the off-the-shelf cleaning products we use in our homes. They are composed of toxic chemicals that are recognised asthma triggers. These chemicals can even be made into bombs! You want a clean healthy home? Start by getting rid of these ghastly commercial concoctions and let’s get back to simple basics. The best and most effective way to clean almost anything is good old-fashioned sodium bicarbonate and vinegar!

Lemon juice is great if you don’t like the smell of vinegar. Of course you would dilute your vinegar or lemon juice in water. Add a couple of drops of Tea Tree oil and you have wiped out just about every nasty thing going, in a natural healthy way.
