When you start asking for about peak flow meter when what age did your child start using it.
Thanks
My daughter couldn’t make the peak flow meter work until she was 8. I know lots of kids do it younger, for some reason she just couldn’t coordinate her breath and make a tight enough seal to use it. I’m not sure if he’ll be able to do it at 3, but you could ask the doctor to show you how, and you could certainly give it a try. But you can have an asthma plan at any age, so make sure you and your pediatrician are very clear on when he needs his various medications, and also on what syjmptoms should make you call the doctor or take him to the ER. You may want to ask whether he needs checkups more often than every year, just to evaluate whether any changes are needed to his asthma plan (our pediatrician recommends a checkup every 6 months to monitor the asthma). If you haven’t already, ask about getting him allergy tested so you can work on getting as many of his allergy triggers as possible out of his environment (both at home and at school). Ask if you need things like dust mite covers on pillows, a HEPA filter on your vacuum, etc.
And wash his hands constantly.
If my daughter so much as gets a cold, she usually ends up in the hospital from the asthma, so I’ve become obsessive about germs!
In my community if a child has been hospitalized for asthma, they’ll actually send an asthma educator to your house to go over with you and your child everything you could possibly ever want to know (they go into the schools, too, to talk to the teachers and make sure there are no allergic triggers at school). I thought I was pretty educated (I have asthma, too), but I got a lot out of it (who knew that the tubing for your nebulizer expires and has to be replaced periodically???) Ask your doctor if there are similar resources in your area. Good luck.
